ApeCoin Celebrates Fourth Anniversary in The Otherside Metaverse

The Bored Ape Yacht Club’s (BAYC) sister project, ApeCoin, is marking its fourth anniversary, celebrating years of ecosystem expansion and development.

According to a tweet from the official ApeCoin X account, the project will be celebrating the anniversary in the Otherside Metaverse. Participants have been instructed to use the ApeCoin (APE) emote in the Otherside, post their shots, and tag the project on X.

The APE emote is an interactive 3D animation represented by a gorilla/ape icon in the Otherside. Community members use this specialized icon to celebrate moments and show engagement in the metaverse. Apecoin intends to reward some creators for celebrating the anniversary with the emote in the Otherside.

Over the last four years, ApeCoin has evolved from a token powering the BAYC and Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC) collections to one that is vital to the layer-3 scaling solution, ApeChain. When Yuga Labs launched ApeCoin through the ApeCoin DAO in March 2022, the company defined the asset as a cultural, gaming, and commerce asset for the growing decentralized Ape community.

Besides functioning as the governance and utility token for the BAYC and MAYC collections, APE was also integrated into the world of play-to-earn (P2E) gaming. Additionally, the luxury fashion retailer Gucci began accepting APE in select U.S. stores. The announcement came alongside the unveiling of exclusive BAYC-inspired garments, which enabled Ape holders to claim their status in real life.

In late 2024, the ApeCoin DAO launched Web3 domains for its community members. The initiative allowed members to create digital identities by converting long addresses into readable names with a .APE suffix, using blockchain technology. They could interact with the domain service via ApeChain, which had been launched a few days prior.

Within the subsequent six months, the Yuga Labs ecosystem gradually migrated its services from the Ethereum network to ApeChain. The migration included services like the ApeCoin NFT staking feature, which was initially available only to the BAYC and MAYC collections.

As the ApeCoin ecosystem grows, the token continues to cement its position in the Web3 cultural space. The project continues to record growth in active wallets, despite market conditions, since the beginning of the year. It remains to be seen how well the project will perform over the coming years.
