OpenAI says GPT-6.1 Terra is rolling out in ChatGPT Work and Codex, with API access, a 1,050,000-token context window and vendor-reported benchmark results.
OpenAI has introduced GPT-6.1 Terra, describing it as a faster model for computer use that is now beginning to roll out across ChatGPT Work and Codex. The release is significant because it extends the model into product tiers used for professional work while also making it available through OpenAI’s API.
Evidence and context
In OpenAI’s Oct. 26, 2026 announcement, the company positioned GPT-6.1 Terra as a model for visual reasoning, computer use and natural writing, and said it is the successor to GPT-5.6 Terra. OpenAI’s developer documentation says the model is available as gpt-6.1-terra through the API, with standard pricing of $1 per million input tokens, $0.05 per million cached input tokens and $5 per million output tokens.
The documented context window is 1,050,000 tokens, with a maximum output of 128,000 tokens and a knowledge cutoff of June 1, 2026, according to OpenAI’s developer docs. The model accepts text and images and produces text; native audio and video modalities are not supported. Tool calling requires the Responses API, and prompts above 272,000 input tokens are charged at higher rates, OpenAI says.
OpenAI’s release notes, updated Oct. 26, 2026, say GPT-6.1 Terra is beginning to roll out in ChatGPT Work and Codex for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans. The company also said access depends on plan, region, workspace settings and rollout progress, which means availability may vary for users during the rollout period.
On performance, OpenAI reported 50.3% on Terminal-Bench 4.0 at maximum reasoning effort, compared with 21.5% for GPT-5.6 Terra, and said the model recorded a 4.3% factual-error rate on its internal difficult-prompts evaluation at maximum effort. These are vendor-reported results and have not been independently verified in the material provided. OpenAI also said Sol and Astra remain better choices for the most complex coding tasks, and classified Terra at the Critical cybersecurity capability threshold under its Preparedness Framework.
Recent release-note entries show Terra follows other model updates in the same product line, including GPT-6 Pro on Oct. 16, 2026 and GPT-6.1 Sol on Sept. 29, 2026. No market data was supplied for a token tied to this launch, and no next catalyst date was provided in the source material.
