Bitcoin rallies to $78,843, fueled by spot ETF demand, derivatives activity, and rising profitability, testing key levels near $80,000.

Bitcoin ($BTC) has surged to $78,843 as of August 24, 2026, testing the $80,000 psychological threshold for the first time since 2024. The rally, which marks a significant shift from its $63,024 level less than two weeks ago, has been fueled by a combination of aggressive spot buying, rising derivatives activity, and record-setting inflows into spot Bitcoin ETFs.

The current move reflects a 25% gain in just over a week, with Bitcoin recording its largest-ever weekly dollar gain, according to data from August 23. Spot Bitcoin ETFs have led the charge, with inflows totaling $1.92 billion for the week ending August 21, well above historical averages. This surge in institutional demand comes alongside broader market signals of heightened speculation and leverage.

Spot and Derivatives Markets in Overdrive

Glassnode reports that perpetual futures taker flows have sharply favored buyers, driving cumulative volume beyond upper statistical bands. Futures open interest has also expanded, suggesting increasing speculative participation. These indicators point to a broader risk-on sentiment among traders, with liquidity deepening at the same time turnover accelerates.

Spot markets are seeing similar enthusiasm. The sharp rise in ETF activity highlights institutional capital’s role in sustaining Bitcoin’s momentum. Glassnode’s analysis suggests this rally is tactically driven, with rising activity but muted macro inflows indicating a focus on short-term positioning rather than long-term accumulation.

On-Chain Activity and Profitability Spike

On-chain metrics show a notable uptick in network engagement. Daily active addresses have risen, accompanied by a sharp increase in entity-adjusted transfer volumes, signaling stronger economic throughput. Investor profitability has surged, with both unrealized and realized profit metrics climbing well above historical norms. Over 70% of Bitcoin’s circulating supply is now considered “in profit.” This shift in profitability is driving increased profit-taking, contrasting with prior periods of loss-driven spending.

The structure of market participants also reflects a shift toward more price-sensitive capital. However, Glassnode notes that “hot capital” is driving the current rally, while broader macro inflows remain subdued. This dynamic suggests the rally could be vulnerable if short-term interest wanes.

Testing Key Levels

Bitcoin is currently trading just below its intraday high of $79,934, testing the critical $80,000 level that previously acted as a psychological barrier during its November 2024 bull run. That rally, which was fueled by post-halving dynamics and spot ETF enthusiasm, saw Bitcoin reach an all-time high before entering a prolonged consolidation.

While the current rally mirrors some of those dynamics, the absence of strong macro inflows raises questions about its sustainability. Analysts caution that the move could face resistance if profit-taking accelerates or if the speculative fervor cools in derivatives markets.

What’s Next?

Traders will be closely watching whether Bitcoin can hold above $80,000 in the coming days. With rising spot ETF demand and robust on-chain activity, the momentum could persist, though the lack of significant macro capital inflows remains a potential headwind. Key levels to monitor include $75,500, which served as a breakout point earlier this week, and $80,000, a psychological level that could dictate the next phase of Bitcoin’s price action.
