Bitcoin ETFs Lose $149M as Fidelity Leads Broad Selling

Key Takeaways

9-Day Inflow Streak Ends for Bitcoin ETFs

The month ended with a sharp change in tone.

After nearly two weeks of persistent institutional buying, bitcoin ETFs moved decisively into the red. The $148.69 million outflow on the last day of September was led by Fidelity’s FBTC, which shed $125.58 million alone.

Bitwise’s BITB lost another $13.63 million, while Blackrock’s IBIT posted a $9.48 million exit. No bitcoin fund recorded an inflow, with trading volume reaching $2.36 billion and net assets closing at $107.98 billion.

The reversal ends a nine-day stretch that had pushed roughly $3 billion into the products. For investors tracking bitcoin’s price alongside ETF flows, Wednesday’s outflows offer the first meaningful test of whether recent institutional accumulation can withstand softer market momentum.

Selling Spreads Beyond Bitcoin

Ether ETFs recorded a second consecutive day of outflows, losing $59.58 million on Wednesday.

Fidelity’s FETH led with $26.60 million in withdrawals, closely followed by Grayscale’s Ether Mini Trust at $25.48 million. Grayscale’s ETHE shed another $7.50 million. Trading activity totaled $653.41 million, while net assets fell to $17.60 billion.

Zcash ETFs also came under pressure. Grayscale’s ZCSH lost $30.25 million, pushing net assets down to $875.29 million. HYPE ETFs shed $5.03 million through Bitwise’s BHYP, leaving net assets at $482.95 million.

The breadth of the selling suggests investors reduced exposure across several corners of the crypto ETF market rather than concentrating withdrawals in a single asset.

Solana Weakens Despite Pockets of Demand

Solana ETFs posted $11.10 million in net outflows on Wednesday. Bitwise’s BSOL lost $8.94 million, while Morgan Stanley’s MSOL and Vaneck’s VSOL shed $3.20 million and $3.17 million, respectively.

Some buyers remained active. Fidelity’s FSOL attracted $2.77 million, while Canary’s SOLC added $1.43 million. Trading value reached $141.32 million, with net assets closing at $1.91 billion.

XRP ETFs recorded no net flows for the session.

NEAR Stands Alone in the Green

The newest entrant to the ETF market again attracted capital.

Bitwise’s NRR brought in $14.04 million, lifting the newly launched NEAR ETF’s net assets to $52.79 million. It was the only major crypto ETF category to finish Wednesday with positive flows.

Despite the day’s reversal, Bloomberg ETF analysts Eric Balchunas and James Seyffart have pointed to the longer-term recovery in bitcoin ETF demand.

Balchunas noted that lifetime cumulative flows are approaching their previous high-water mark despite a difficult past 11 months. Seyffart added that Bitcoin ETFs are now positive for 2026, though cumulative flows remain roughly $5 billion below their October 2025 peak.

That distinction matters. Wednesday interrupted the recent buying streak, but the broader recovery in institutional bitcoin allocations remains largely intact. The next few sessions will show whether the outflow was routine profit-taking or the beginning of a deeper cooling in ETF demand.
