Uninterrupted Service Across European Markets
Digital asset wealth platform Nexo has updated its European Economic Area (EEA) operating structure to comply with the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCAR). Instead of acquiring a direct MiCAR license, Nexo has split its European client services across two German partners regulated by BaFin, Germany’s Federal Financial Supervisory Authority.
According to a media statement, the two partners are Tangany and DLT Finance. Licensed under MiCAR, Tangany provides custody infrastructure, ensuring segregated digital asset storage. DLT Finance, which is licensed under MiCAR and authorized under MiFID II, provides brokerage and execution infrastructure for digital assets and financial instruments.
Together, these partnerships allow Nexo to offer services that align with European operational standards. Following a testing phase, all Nexo services in the EEA remain fully active without service pauses or operational disruptions for users.
While some industry players have criticized the EU framework as overregulation, Nexo embraced MiCAR to strengthen institutional trust and long-term stability.
“MiCAR is the most consequential regulatory framework digital assets have seen in Europe, and Nexo has been preparing for a long time. When it came to choosing DLT Finance and Tangany, the standard was nonnegotiable: Our partners are best-in-class — rigorously regulated, technically sophisticated, and aligned with how we think about client protection,” said Yasen Yankov, chief product officer at Nexo.
Addressing the broader debate around regulation, Eleonor Genova, head of communications at Nexo, emphasized that regulatory clarity provides a much-needed benchmark for the industry.
“Clear rules are good for the industry’s credibility, and by extension for clients. A framework like MiCAR gives institutions and everyday clients a defined standard to measure a platform against,” Genova told Bitcoin.com News. “Leaning into that standard was a straightforward decision for us — regulatory clarity supports the kind of long-term trust we’re building with our more than 10 million clients across the globe.”
Genova noted that while debate exists over whether strict regulatory regimes might temporarily push innovation offshore, MiCAR acts primarily as an operating baseline rather than a restrictive moat. “Companies that build their operating models around the requirements are positioned to operate with confidence across the EEA,” Genova added. “Even if there is a temporary shift [offshore], activity will return as the ecosystem adjusts and improves in response to clear regulations.”
Industry Consolidation and Platform Trust
As the European market consolidates around this regulatory framework, Nexo expects user behavior to shift, with clients migrating toward platforms that prioritize verified compliance and asset protection.
Executives from Nexo’s infrastructure partners highlighted the significance of the joint achievement.
“This partnership is a strong signal of what’s possible in the post-MiCAR landscape with the right partners and institutional-grade custody infrastructure. What our three teams achieved together despite the project’s complexity sets a blueprint for institutions navigating the European market,” said Martin Kreitmair, CEO of Tangany.
“The strongest digital asset platforms are built on infrastructure that clients do not have to think about, it simply works. Our role is to support Nexo with the financial market infrastructure and execution capabilities needed to deliver a seamless user experience across multiple products,” said Alan Kennedy, senior partnerships manager at DLT Finance.
Ranking among the largest centralized crypto lenders globally, Nexo’s compliance framework solidifies its presence in Europe, positioning it to help shape the next phase of regulated digital asset wealth management.
